"Last night, I had a dream about a dog bite.
In my dream, I walked home from school. The street was empty. The sun was going down. Long shadows stretched across the road.
A dog appeared at the end of the street. Big and black. No owner. No collar. Just standing there, watching me.
I stopped. "Nice dog," I said softly. "Good dog."

Then I saw the strangest thing. The dog's eyes were not angry. They were sad. Full of tears.
"Why?" the dog seemed to ask.
I did not understand. It was biting me, but it looked like it was crying.
"Why did you leave me?" the dog said with its eyes.
Then I noticed. A red collar in the grass. My old dog's collar. From years ago. The dog I gave away when we moved houses.
The black dog looked at me one more time. Then it let go and walked away. Into the shadows. Gone.
Then I woke up.
I checked my leg. No bite. No blood. Just my blanket twisted around my foot.
But I sat there shaking for a long time.
