"He was under the sink. That's where he always was, honestly, half his life spent on his back with a flashlight in his mouth. And I'm standing there handing him stuff. He'd say "the other one" and I'd hand him something and he'd say "no, the other other one" and we'd go back and forth like that. It was annoying. It was so annoyingly normal. I remember his hands. That's what I keep coming back to. His hands looked right. The calluses, the one fingernail that was always bruised, the way he'd wipe them on his jeans. I haven't seen those hands in six years and there they were, reaching out from under the sink, and I just kept handing him tools I don't even own. He came out eventually and sat on the floor with his back against the cabinet and wiped his forehead and said something about the pipes being "a mess, just like everything else in this house." And I laughed. I actually laughed. And then I looked at him and thought "wait, you're not supposed to be here" but I didn't say it. I didn't want to ruin it. So I just sat down on the floor next to him. Then we were in his truck. Driving somewhere. He was smoking out the window, which he quit doing years before he died, but in the dream he was smoking and I didn't say anything about it. He asked me how work was going and I gave him the short version and he nodded and said "well, you'll figure it out" and that was it. That was the whole conversation. I'd give anything for that conversation to have been longer. I woke up and it was still dark. And I just lay there. Didn't move. I could still smell the cigarette smoke, which doesn't make sense because he's gone and the truck is gone and I was in my own bed. I stayed still for a long time trying to keep it. Trying to stay in the dream a little longer. It didn't work. I got up and made coffee and stood at the sink and looked at the pipes underneath and thought about calling a plumber. I haven't. They're fine. He was wrong about the pipes. But I still think about his hands."

Freudian Analysis
Core Theme

"This dream reflects unresolved grief and a deep longing for the ordinary, unremarkable moments that once defined your relationship with your deceased father. The focus on his hands, tools, and casual conversation suggests that your psyche is replaying childhood patterns of helping and being helped as a defense against the finality of loss. The annoying familiarity of the scene reveals that you miss not just him, but the mundane rhythm of his presence."

Hidden Emotions and Symbols

✦ Under The Sink

Represents the hidden, domestic space where your father performed caretaking and repair.

✦ Father's Hands

Symbolize tangible memory, masculine skill, and the physical presence you still mourn.

✦ Handing Tools

Reflects childhood roles of cooperation and the desire to be useful to him again.

✦ The Truck

Indicates a journey shared in silence, where his brief advice felt like enough.

✦ Cigarette Smoke

Represents a forbidden sensory memory that bypasses logic and keeps him alive.

Insight

Your dream is not asking you to fix anything; it is asking you to let yourself miss him without editing the memory. Honor the ordinary moments by speaking about him, writing down these details, or allowing grief to visit without pushing it away. When you suppress the urge to say 'you're not supposed to be here,' you also suppress the love that makes the loss painful.
