Dream about an Ex in a grocery Store

"We were in my car. Not my current car, the old Honda with the cracked dashboard and the tape deck that ate my favorite cassette. They were in the passenger seat with their feet up on the dash like they always used to do and I used to hate that but in the dream I didn't say anything about it. We were looking for parking. Just circling. And they kept going "there, there, no wait, that's a compact" and I kept missing every spot because I was too busy looking at them. They had that haircut they got right before we broke up. The one I said I liked but actually didn't. I don't remember what we were arguing about. It was one of those dreams where you're mad but you don't know why. Something about a text message? Or maybe their mom. Their mom was definitely in there somewhere, at a table, not saying anything, just watching me with this expression. Then we're not in the car anymore. We're in a grocery store. The fluorescent lights are buzzing and they're squeezing avocados and I'm standing there holding a cart with one wobbly wheel and I want to say something real. Something like "I still think about you when I hear that one song" or "I drove past your street last week and didn't turn" but instead I just said "get the firm ones" and they laughed and it was the same laugh and I felt it in my chest like a bruise. They walked away toward the produce and I just let them. Didn't follow. Didn't call out. The cart had like three things in it. I don't even know what they were. I woke up at 4am and checked my phone before I remembered we haven't talked in two years. Their number's deleted but I still know it by heart. Lay there in the dark doing the math on how long it's been. Too long to still be dreaming about them in grocery stores. Not long enough, apparently."
