"So I'm in the bathroom. Scissors in my hand. The good scissors, the ones I use for cutting tags off things, and I'm just. Cutting. Big chunks. Not even measuring. Just grabbing a handful and snipping. And it's falling into the sink in these long pieces and I'm watching it pile up and I'm not thinking anything. Not "stop." Not "what are you doing." Just snip. Snip. Snip. I remember the sound more than anything. That dry crunch. And the weight of it, how heavy hair is when you're holding a whole handful of it. Heavier than you'd think. I kept going until the sides were short, like above my ears, and then I started on the back, reaching around blind, just cutting whatever I could grab. My roommate knocked on the door and asked if I was okay and I said "yeah" and kept cutting. Normal voice. Normal everything. And she said "okay" and walked off and I heard the TV come on in the other room and I'm still in there with the scissors just going at it. Then I looked in the mirror. And it was bad. Patchy. Lopsided. One side shorter than the other. Little tufts sticking up where I'd missed spots. And I just stared at myself. No panic. No regret. Just this flat "huh" feeling. Like looking at a haircut someone else got. And I turned my head side to side, checking it out, and I remember thinking "well, it'll grow back" and that was it. That was the whole reaction. I swept it up. All of it. Into the trash. And I went to bed. And in the dream I woke up the next morning and it was long again. Back to normal. Like nothing happened. And I stood in front of that same mirror and ran my hands through it and it was all there, full length, and I felt nothing about that either. I woke up for real and my hand went straight to my head. Full length. All there. I got up and looked in the bathroom mirror and stood there for a while, just looking, turning my head side to side. Then I made coffee. Didn't touch the scissors. But I kept thinking about that pile in the sink and how heavy it was. Couldn't shake it all day."
Jungian Analysis
Core Theme

"This dream centers on a deliberate yet emotionally detached act of self-alteration, echoing the archetypal death-rebirth cycle within the collective unconscious. Cutting your own hair in a private bathroom suggests a profound identity shift is underway, but the absence of panic or regret points to protective numbness and unfinished individuation. The hair regrowing overnight reveals the psyche's natural drive toward wholeness, asking you to integrate what was severed rather than simply move on."

Hidden Emotions and Symbols

✦ Hair

Represents vitality, personal identity, and the persona you present to the outer world.

✦ Scissors

Symbolize the cutting intellect and decisive will severing old attachments or self-images.

✦ Bathroom Mirror

Reflects a private threshold for purification, self-examination, and objective witnessing.

✦ Roommate's Knock

Indicates the ordinary social world that cannot interrupt a deep unconscious transformation.

✦ Regrowth

Psychic renewal, cyclical return, and the Self's insistence on restoring balance.

Wisdom

Notice where you have been cutting away parts of yourself automatically, without measuring the loss or feeling its weight. The dream asks you to honor the heaviness of what fell, even if it seems to grow back, because true individuation requires integrating the emotions beneath the flatness. Trust renewal, but also create a quiet ritual, journaling or reflection, to ask what needed to change and what was severed only from numbness.
