The octopus in My sink

"There's an octopus in my sink. Just. Sitting there. In the basin. All curled up. And I'm rinsing a plate. Around it. Carefully. Not touching it. Just. Rinsing. It moved a little. One arm. Slow. Reaching out. Feeling the edge of the sink. And I watched it. And then I put the plate in the rack. And I looked at it. And it looked at me. If octopuses look. And I said "hey." Out loud. And it didn't say anything. Obviously. I filled a glass with water and it watched me do it. Followed my hand. And I drank the water standing there. Looking at it. And it was fine. It was just. Fine. A whole octopus in my sink. And I finished my dishes. And I said "night" and went to bed. I woke up and checked the sink. Empty. Clean. Just my sponge. I stood there a minute. Then I made coffee. And all day I kept thinking about it. Not scared. Just. Warm. Like I'd made a friend. Weird. But true."
