Fish on the lawn, rain at dawn

"There were fish on the front lawn. Just lying there in the grass, silver and still. Not flopping. Past that. Dozens of them, spread out like somebody had dumped a net. I walked out in my bare feet and just stood there looking at them. The grass was wet. I remember that. My feet got cold. I started picking them up and carrying them to the lake. It wasn't far in the dream, just past the fence. I'd carry one at a time and drop it in and it would just float there, belly up. I kept doing it anyway. Then I was on the porch and my neighbor was watering his flowers like nothing was happening. I wanted to ask him about the fish but I couldn't figure out how to say it. I woke up and it was raining. Hard. I lay there listening to it and felt this weird relief, like the rain was fixing something. Got up and looked out the front window at the grass. Just grass. Wet grass. Nothing else."
