"I couldn't remember how I died, or even whether I had. One moment there was nothing, and the next I was standing in a restaurant, the room bright and ordinary around me, people eating and talking as if nothing had happened. Someone I knew was holding pictures, and when they showed me, my stomach dropped. They were pictures of my dead body. In the first, I was lying on a hospital bed in a hospital robe, still and pale. The second was zoomed in on my face and shoulders. My face was completely blank. My eyes were wide open, staring into nothing, and my mouth hung open, filled with blood. I stared at the pictures, unable to look away, trying to understand how I could be looking at myself. Then I woke up. My mind was spinning, and for a few long moments I didn't know what was real. I felt confused, shaken, and worried, and the image of my own empty face stayed in my head long after I opened my eyes."

Reflection

The dream confronts you with a version of yourself that is empty and silent, while life goes on around you. This may mirror a waking fear of being unseen or of losing your own vitality. Rather than turning away, allow the image to ask: where in your life do you feel like a spectator to your own existence? The shock you feel is a call to re-engage with what makes you feel alive, to fill the blankness with breath and voice again.
