Small Talk 101 - The art of conversation
True, some people are born with the gift of gab. Others need a little coaching. Allow us to help you find your voice:
- Read the newspaper. Not front to back, just keep up on current events. When you know what's going on in the world and in your neighborhood, it's easier to find common ground. Even if you know just a little bit on a subject, it may open the door to other topics.
- Compliment the other person... sincerely. It sounds cliche, but it's the truth - people like and appreciate being noticed. A truthful compliment followed by an open-ended question can get the ball rolling.
- Choose topics that are positive and enlightening.Talking about the most recent string of murders or robberies may say 'gloom and doom' to your date.
- Point out something in your location that is interesting or unique. For example, "I've never seen that coffee shop before. I wonder when it opened?" Not only does this open the door for conversation about local stores and the changing landscape, it also affords the opportunity to grab a cup of coffee.
Open your mind and take in the world around you. You'll soon see that there are unlimited topics just waiting for conversation.
