I finished the yard eventually. Every strip. Right up to the edge of where the spider was sitting, and then I turned the mower off and stood there. And it was just me and this giant spider and the smell of cut grass. And I looked at it and it looked at me and I said "okay" out loud. Just "okay." And it lifted one leg. Slowly. And I turned and walked inside and locked the door and stood in the kitchen with my heart going and my hands shaking and I realized I'd been terrified the whole time. The whole time. I just hadn't let myself feel it until it was over.
I woke up and my hands were clenched. Actually clenched, fists, nails in my palms. I lay there and made myself unclench them one finger at a time. Got up and looked out the window at my yard. No spider. Obviously no spider. But I didn't mow that day. Left it. Let it grow a little. Didn't feel like being outside."
