"So I'm making coffee. Normal. And I grab two mugs. Set them both down. Pour into both. And I stand there looking at the second cup and I think "oh." And I don't know what to do with it. So I just leave it there. On the counter. Getting cold. This happened over and over. In the dream. I'd wake up, make coffee, pour two cups, and then stand there. And the second cup would just sit. And I'd go about my day and come home and it would still be there, full, cold, and I'd dump it out and wash the mug and put it back and the next morning I'd do it again. Same thing. Every time. And I never learned. I never remembered. I just kept pouring two cups. My sister called in the dream. Just to check in. And she asked how I was doing and I said fine and she said "you sure" and I said yeah and we talked about something else. The weather. Her kids. And the whole time I'm looking at that second cup on the counter and I wanted to tell her about it but I didn't. What was I supposed to say. "I keep making coffee for someone who isn't here." She'd think I was losing it. Maybe I was. Then I'm at the grocery store and I'm in the cereal aisle and I reach for the kind he liked. The boring kind. The bran flakes. And I put it in the cart and I'm halfway down the aisle before I stop and look at it and think "I don't even like bran flakes." And I stood there in the aisle holding this box and I couldn't put it back. I just couldn't. I carried it around the whole store and bought it and took it home and put it in the cabinet next to the two mugs. And it sat there. And I never opened it. I woke up and the first thing I did was go to the kitchen. One mug. I made one cup. Just one. And I stood there drinking it and I felt this weird ache, this hollow feeling, like I'd forgotten something. Like I was supposed to be doing something and I wasn't. I opened the cabinet and looked at all the mugs. All of them. Then I closed it and finished my coffee. One cup. Just one. For now."
