Shedding the old Self at the stone Quarry

"i was trying to run late for a shift at a job i quit five years ago, but the road just turned into this dusty dirt path leading up to an abandoned stone quarry. my whole body felt intensely heavy and stiff, like my skin was made of dry paper or hard tree bark that was way too tight for me. every step took so much effort, and i had this urgent feeling that i had to peel it all off before sunset or i'd be stuck inside it forever. i sat down on a warm, flat rock and grabbed at the edge of my wrist, and a huge seam just split open without any pain at all. i started peeling this thick, brittle shell off my arms and legs, and under it, my skin was glowing white and felt amazingly cool, like fresh silk. then suddenly i wasn't at the quarry anymore--i was standing on top of a grassy hill in the middle of a windstorm, but instead of being cold, i felt lighter than air, like i could just step off the edge and float. i took this huge, deep breath, deeper than I've ever felt in real life, and started laughing out loud because i knew whatever used to weigh me down was just empty shells left on the ground behind me."
