The dry Fish in the empty Pool

"i was walking around the backyard of my childhood home holding a blue plastic bucket, trying to find my lost house keys before it started raining. then i looked into our old swimming pool, except it wasn't full of water--it was just this shallow, murky puddle at the bottom, completely lined with hundreds of dead fish laying on their sides. they were all different sizes, some tiny gray minnows and huge silvery carp, completely still with dull, cloudy eyes staring up at the sky. i didn't even care about the keys anymore. i climbed down the rusted ladder because i had this desperate, heavy feeling that i needed to save at least one of them, but as soon as my feet hit the concrete, the sun got super hot and dried up the rest of the water. i reached down to pick up a big trout, but its scales were completely dry and stiff like cardboard, and it just lay weightless in my hands. then suddenly i was sitting in the backseat of a moving bus staring out the window at a highway, but i could still feel that dry, hollow weight in my chest, feeling so helpless because everything had ended before i even got there to fix it."
