The glasses on the staircase

"I was in a hallway that felt like my best friend's old apartment but the stairs went the wrong direction, and I kept noticing small things, her coat on the hook, reading glasses on a table, like she'd just stepped out. kept waiting for her to walk in, laughing about something. Nobody else was around. I opened cupboards looking for nothing in particular, everything smelling faintly of her perfume and then not at all when I leaned closer. picked up the glasses and they were heavier than glasses should be. I sat on the bottom stair holding them, this ache pressing in my chest, not sharp, just there. tried calling her name and my voice came out tiny. Then I was outside in some parking lot, still holding the glasses, no idea how I got there. I woke up with that hollow weight lingering a good while."
