The whale That swam Through the sky

"There's a whale in the sky above my house. Just floating. Slow. Like it was swimming through air. Big. Blue-gray. And I'm in the backyard hanging laundry and I look up and there it is and I think "huh" and pin another shirt to the line. It moved over the house. Blocked the sun for a second. Shade. And then it was past. And I kept hanging laundry. And I could hear it. Not a whale sound. More like. A hum. Low. Like a cello. And it vibrated in my chest a little. And I thought "that's nice." My neighbor came out and asked if I saw it and I said "yeah" and he said "crazy" and went back inside. And I finished the laundry. And the whale kept going. Off toward the horizon. Slow. And I stood there with the empty basket and watched it until it was small. And I felt full. Not happy exactly. Just. Full. I woke up and I could still feel that hum. In my chest. I got up and did laundry for real. Stood in the yard. Looked up. Nothing. Just sky. But I stayed out there a while. Just in case."
