The unseen Pursuer in narrow Streets

"I was walking down a street that kept narrowing, and felt it before I heard it, footsteps behind me, steady, not rushing, which somehow felt worse than if they had been. glanced back and couldn't make out a face, just a shape, dark, closing distance slow and sure. I started walking faster, then running, legs doing that heavy dream thing, barely covering ground despite how hard I pushed. Street turned into an alley I didn't choose, dead ending options at every turn, doors locked when I tried them. The footsteps never got louder exactly, just stayed right behind me no matter how fast I went, like distance didn't matter to whoever it was. I tried screaming and only breath came out, nothing with sound to it. I ducked behind something, a dumpster maybe, heart slamming so loud I was sure it'd give me away. I held still, waiting, the footsteps slowing right outside. Right as a shadow fell across me the dream cut, and I woke up gripping the sheets, still listening for footsteps that weren't there."
