"We got the news that my mother had died. She had collapsed at work and was taken all the way to Tagaytay, a place that made no sense, since it wasn't anywhere near our home. Somehow, no one questioned it. Someone was in our house when the news came. She seemed to know exactly what to do, and she looked a little like my mother. I could never see her face, because she stayed slouched over, her eyes fixed on her phone the whole time, organizing everything calmly while the rest of us stood frozen. Then a thought cut through the haze: wait, I'm sleeping. This must be a dream. The house and the news loosened their grip, and I woke up. When I woke up, my heart was heavy and my chest felt tight for a moment. I lay still, reminding myself that she was fine, and the relief came slowly, along with a wish to tell someone about it so the dream would lose its power."
