Danny's smile on the open Highway

"I was driving down a highway in a nice white car with a beige interior, the road smooth and open ahead of me. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed someone in the passenger seat. I looked over, and there he was. Danny. I couldn't believe it. "Danny? What are you doing here? You're supposed to be dead," I said, my voice shaking with shock. He just looked back at me with a big, happy smile, relaxed and enjoying the ride. "I am," he said, "but that doesn't mean I'm not still here with you." I stared at him for a moment. Then I nodded, said "fuck it," and reached for the volume knob. I turned the music up and felt the bass thumping from the subs in the trunk, the two of us riding along together like it was any other day. Then I woke up. I lay there in bed, trying to grasp what I had just dreamed. It had felt completely real. I wasn't even driving my own car, which is an old, rusted four-door Honda Civic, ugly as anything but reliable and easy on gas. And I had no idea where the road was taking us. My chest felt warm and heavy at the same time, and I stayed still for a long while, holding on to his smile."
