"i was standing in this huge, retro kitchen that looked like a mix of my grandmother's house and an old diner, trying to boil water to make tea for someone who was waiting outside in a car. the morning light coming through the blinds was this warm, buttery yellow, casting long soft stripes across the pale green checkered linoleum. my bare feet were on the cold tile, but the room felt so cozy and quiet, like time had completely stopped. i kept trying to find a kettle in the wood cabinets, but every cabinet i opened was filled with neatly stacked, empty ceramic teacups in different pastel colors. i wasn't even frustrated or stressed that i couldn't find the kettle--i just stood there running my hand over the cool laminate countertop, listening to the gentle hum of the yellow refrigerator in the corner. then all of a sudden i was sitting on the edge of the kitchen counter eating a slice of fresh bread, watching faint dust motes float through the sunny air, feeling this deep, settling stillness in my chest like there was nowhere else in the world i needed to be."
