"So I'm walking. Downtown, I think. And my eyes close. Just. Close. And I can't open them. I'm trying, I'm using my fingers, prying at my own eyelids, and they won't budge. And I'm standing there on the sidewalk with my hands on my face going "okay, okay, okay." And then I just started walking again. With my eyes closed. And I didn't bump into anything. I could tell where I was going. Sort of. Like I could feel the buildings on either side, feel where the crosswalk was, feel when to step off the curb. And I remember thinking "I can do this, I can do this" and I kept going, one foot in front of the other, eyes shut the whole time. Somebody said my name. Right next to me. And I turned toward the voice and opened my eyes. Or thought I did. And everything was white. Blinding white. Not light. Just nothing. And I blinked and blinked and it stayed white and I said "I can't see" and the voice said "you're fine" and I said "no, I really can't see" and the voice said "you're fine" again. Same tone. Same words. And I stopped arguing because it clearly wasn't getting me anywhere. Then the white faded and I was in a room. I don't know what room. And there were people around me, I could sense them, but I couldn't see their faces. Just shapes. Just outlines. And I wanted to see faces so badly. I remember that. That was the whole want. Just to see one face. And I reached out and touched somebody's cheek and it felt like a face, all the parts were there, but I couldn't see it. And I said "who are you" and they didn't answer. I woke up and my eyes flew open. Literally flew open. And I sat up and looked around my dark bedroom and I could see. The window. The dresser. My own hands. And I sat there for a minute just looking at things. Everything. The lamp. The water glass. The pile of clothes on the chair. And I felt this huge relief. Got up and turned on every light in the apartment. Just to see them. Just to watch them come on."
