"So I'm eating. Lunch. A sandwich, I think. And mid-bite I feel it. This crack. Not a break, a crack, like ice under your foot. And I freeze with the sandwich still in my mouth and my tongue goes straight to the spot and there it is. A line. Down the side of one of my back teeth. Rough edge. And I just. Kept chewing. Swallowed. Took another bite. And the whole time my tongue is poking at that crack, running over it, checking it, and I can feel it getting bigger. Not in a real way, I don't think, but in the dream it was growing. Spreading. Like a crack in a windshield. And I kept eating the sandwich. All of it. Every bite. Poking the tooth between bites. I went to the bathroom to look. Opened my mouth in the mirror and tilted my head back and there it was. This dark line running down the tooth. And I touched it with my fingernail and a little piece chipped off. Just a tiny piece, but it came off, and I stood there holding it between my finger and thumb, this little white shard, and I didn't know what to do with it. So I put it in my pocket. I don't know why. I just put it in my pocket. The rest of the dream I was at a party. Somebody's birthday. And everyone's eating cake and I'm standing there with a fork and I can't bring myself to take a bite because I'm afraid of what'll happen to the tooth. But I'm also poking at it with my tongue the whole time. Constantly. And people kept asking me stuff and I kept nodding with my mouth closed and they probably thought I was being weird but I couldn't open my mouth because I didn't want to see their faces if a piece fell out. I woke up and my tongue went straight to that tooth. Running over it. Smooth. Whole. I got up and checked in the mirror, mouth wide open, tilting my head at every angle. Nothing. Perfect tooth. But I could still feel the crack. Phantom crack. I ate breakfast carefully that morning. Chewed on the other side. Still do sometimes, honestly. Even though I know it's fine. The brain remembers."

Reflection

Your dream asks you to notice where in waking life you are chewing through stress while monitoring a crack you fear will worsen. Rather than repeatedly probing the wound, schedule one concrete check—medical, emotional, or relational—and then practice trusting the result. The phantom crack is your brain's memory of fear, not proof of current damage; gentle reassurance and self-compassion can help you chew on both sides again.
