"walked outside for no real reason, wasn't even looking for anything, and there it was, this car just sitting in my driveway like it had always been there, and somehow I knew it was mine, that certain kind of dream-knowing where nobody has to tell you. wasn't even a car I could describe well if you asked me now, color kept sort of shifting a little when I looked away and back, but in the moment it felt exactly right, exactly what I wanted even though I never remember wanting it before that second. ran my hand along the hood and it was warm, warmer than it should've been, like it'd been sitting in sun that wasn't actually out. got in without really deciding to, just sort of folded into the seat, and the inside smelled like nothing, no new car smell, just absence, but that didn't bother me at the time. dashboard had buttons I didn't recognize and I pressed one anyway, no hesitation, and something lit up, didn't catch what. started driving and the road wasn't any road I know, went on further than roads usually do, houses blurring past that felt like my neighborhood but stretched out longer. I had this bubbling happiness the whole time, kept laughing for no particular reason, hands loose on the wheel, windows down even though I don't remember rolling them down. wanted to call someone and tell them, kept reaching for a phone that wasn't there. at some point I picked up my sister, she was just standing on a corner like she'd been waiting, didn't seem surprised at all, got right in, and we didn't really talk, just drove, radio playing something I couldn't name a single note of after. the good feeling just kept building the whole time, didn't peak and drop like feelings usually do, just kept climbing. drove until the road sort of dissolved into nothing, not a crash, just an ending, and that's where I woke up, still smiling a little, before I even opened my eyes."
