"I was standing beside a lake at night, although I don't remember deciding to go there. The water was completely black and so still that it looked like glass. I kept waiting for something to move in it.
My shoes were already wet. I must have walked into the water without noticing, because it was up around my ankles and getting deeper whenever I took a step back. I tried to turn around, but the shore seemed farther away than it had been.
There was a small boat nearby with one empty seat. I climbed in because it felt safer, even though the boat had no oars. It started moving on its own, slowly toward the middle of the lake.
I could hear someone calling my name from the shore. I thought it was my sister, but when I called back, the voice came from underneath the boat.
I leaned over to look and saw a pale hand below the surface. It wasn't reaching for me. It was just floating there, palm up, like it was waiting.
The boat tipped suddenly. I woke up before I fell in, with the strange feeling that the water had been watching me."
