"I was ice skating on a frozen lake, ringed by snowy mountains, in a winter wonderland where everything was white and still. I was skating beautifully, which was strange, because I'm not a good skater in real life. I laughed and smiled, went as fast as I could, and twirled across the ice, happier than I had been in a long time. Then I spotted a tree in the middle of the rink, covered in blooming yellow flowers. I skated over and peered behind it. My two aunts were sitting at a table, wearing yellow dresses and their Sunday best, having what looked like brunch. "Hello!" I said. They looked at me, puzzled, then turned back to their conversation as if I weren't there. I stood on the ice, confused about why they were there and why they had brushed me off. Unsure, I skated away from the rink. When I woke up, I could still feel the joy of gliding across the ice, but it was tangled up with a lingering, uneasy question mark about my aunts. The images of the snow and the yellow flowers stayed vivid in my mind."
